Helping Kids Succeed Ingredients of a Community Initiative

Helping Kids Succeed Handbook
United Way of Hastings developed a user-friendly guidebook to the Helping Kids Succeed model. There are over 900 ideas inside on how to help children and teen build healthy webs of support! Hastings community members contributed all the ideas in the guide. We’ve distributed over 5,000 copies to date - please contact us or stop by to pick up a copy.

Hastings Schools' HKS presentations

This past school year, the HKS model was presented to over 1400 students at Hastings High School and Hastings Middle School (HMS).

  • UWH, the YES Team members, HMS middle school staff, and the HMS Promise Fellows gave presentations to 10th, 8th, 7th, and 6th grade students in Hastings' public schools.
  • We surveyed the 8th grade and of 362 students; over 50% wanted more information on HKS and webs of support, and over 60 indicated they are interested in becoming YES Team members in high school.
  • UWH provided funding to Hastings' three public elementary schools to conduct personal safety and awareness training from the Jacob Wetterling Foundation. Their speaker presented to over 1500 students.

Helping Kids Succeed HKS Community Partners meetings

Over a year ago we started a series of meetings to refocus Helping Kids Succeed. We met monthly with key UWH partners and community members to discuss where we wanted to take the initiative. That evolved into a 5X per year meeting with key stakeholders, education partners, business and government leaders, teen and young adult leaders, and community members.

Our meetings focus on ways the community can support youth and build healthy webs of support. All community members are welcome. Please contact United Way to be added to our mailing and welcome list.

YES Team teen leaders

Helping Kids Succeed For over 4 years we’ve worked closely with teens from the community. We coordinate with the high school counseling and teaching staff, and family and community members to find “emerging leaders.” These are teens who other teens look to and listen to. These teens become our YES Team (Youth Empowerment and Support).

  • We train them to present the HKS model to schools, businesses and community groups. They are invited to our meetings and planning sessions; they give valuable insight into what’s happening in schools and with teens themselves.
  • They also participate in a range of community support activities and projects.

Life 101 teen and young adult workshops

We're working with community members to offer monthly workshops for teens and young adults. These "Life 101" workshops will offer practical life skills presentations, taught by young adults and community members.

  • Topics will include financial management and budgeting, stress and mental health, personal safety, networking and job search skills, basic household repairs, etc.
  • Please check here on the website or social media for topics, dates, and locations.
